WHY BUY BURRAWANG RAMS

Why Buy Burrawang Rams?

Burrawang uses an uncompromisingly strict standard of quality when selecting animals offered for sale. Our quality control standards are applied throughout each animal’s life to ensure animals offered for sale meet the Breed Standard of Excellence for structural correctness and carcass quality.

Independent Typing and Catalogued Comments

All rams prior to sale are independently inspected by Australian and South African qualified breed inspector, Philip van Schalkwyk. The result of Mr van Schalkwyk’s inspection of each animal is reflected as ‘Type’ in the catalogue.

Performance Measurements

Weight, eye muscle depth and rib fat depth, included in each animal’s information, are measured by Sheep Genetics (LambPlan) qualified scanner, Trevor Pearce at various intervals including early post weaning (EPW) or post weaning (PW).  EPW is defined as 120 to 210 days old while PW is defined as 210 to 300 days old. Actual age at time of measurement is provided in the catalogue.

Average daily weight gain is provided for the period between each weighing as indicated by ADG (kg/inv.)

Eye Muscle Shape

With the assistance of Sheep Genetics qualified scanner, Trevor Pearce, Burrawang has been recording the shape of our animals’ eye muscles as well as eye muscle depth (EMD). While eye muscle depth is a good indicator of carcass quality, the shape of the muscle is equally important to meat yield. Shape is scored from 1 to 3 with 3 indicating the most productive shape.

Our stud and commercial breeding selections now incorporate this important production indicator. For the first time, we are including Eye Muscle Shape for each of the rams on offer in this sale. Each ram was scored by Trevor Pearce and the score is shown in the information for each lot.

Working Rams

Some of the rams offered for sale were used as sires in recent stud and/or commercial joinings; this is indicated in the notes section for these rams. It is our policy that all rams are tested prior to sale for Ovine Brucellosis.

Health, Presentation and Ready-to-work Condition

• To ensure the animals are healthy, all of them received Glanvac® 6 in 1 vaccination at tailing, weaning and at prescribed regular intervals and  the rams also received Cydectin® drench.

• Burrawang’s flock is Accredited Ovine Brucellosis Free; Certificate OB-TR expiring 2/28/22.

• Burrawang’s OJD status is MN1; clear of OJD with certificate NS18176.

• To facilitate assessment of conformation at sale, rams were shorn prior to sale.

• Rams are presented in good condition with a healthy fat cover, so they are ready-to-work.

“The real value of a Burrawang ram is not only that he’s structurally sound and lasts longer by years, it’s that he throws ewes worth keeping!”
- We are in the same industry as most of our customers so are focussed on the commercial outcomes of maximising efficient meat production through grazing.

- We only offer animals for sale that we are prepared to use over our own commercial flock.

-We will not sell inferior animals; we cull any animals that are not good enough to use for breeding purposes.

- We are in no rush to be the biggest stud but strive to be the best at producing full blood White Dorpers and Dorpers; no cross outs with Van Rooy, White Suffolk, Poll Dorset, Wiltipoll or any other breed. Dorpers perform.
- Our animals are structurally sound and meet the breed standard which assures walk-ability, productivity, fertility, adaptability and the longevity of retained ewe offspring. This provides our buyers with the full range of long term benefits to be derived by using quality rams.

- Our customers tell us that Burrawang rams last longer than other bloodlines so they may cost more to buy, but are cheaper in the long run Burrawang rams also breed good quality ewe offspring.
